Yesterday I went to the coast on a non-bird related day trip. I did manage
to get my passenger to stop for 10 minutes at the Hoquiam STPonds (fun for
the whole family!). I forgot my scope, so I had to make due with binocs.
There were about 10 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES (well, 1 close enough to ID, I
assume the rest were of the same species) swimming about. Also some flyby
B. Pelicans and many California Gulls. One BUFFLEHEAD next to a couple
SCAUP SP. in the middle of the pond. Griffiths-Priday State Park was
fairly uneventful without a kite, so we left before too long. Here there
were about 30 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 2 LEAST
SANDPIPERS. California Gulls and Caspian Terns were everywhere and a
scattering of R/Billeds, GlWinged, and Westerns accompanied. Groups of
20-30 Brown Pelicans fly by to the south every 10 minutes or so.

Wednesday had some migrant water birds at Luhr Beach with one COMMON LOON,
one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and one SURF SCOTER.
