Sunday Bird Walk: Buttertubs Marsh, Nanaimo, August 24/03 8:50 a.m.
to 11:50 a.m.

Weather: Cloudy, calm winds, about 14? C

Highlights: Some of us had a good look at a Pied-billed Grebe carrying
three chicks on it?s back. There were a great number of Wood Ducks on
the water of the marsh and most were in Eclipse plumage. Four Merlins
stopped by for us to observe. We watched as a Coopers Hawk chased a
Merlin off it?s perch.

Observers: Twenty-eight Sunday birders.

The Sunday bird walk on August 31 will be going to Columbia Beach in
French Creek.

Meet at the store at 8:30 a.m. or at the vacant lots off Admiral Tryon
Boulevard.(Take highway 19A and go past the French Creek Marina, over
the bridge and turn right onto Columbia Drive. Continue to the end of
Columbia Drive and turn right on to Admiral Tryon Boulevard . Continue
on Admiral Tryon Blvd. until you see a couple of vacant lots along the
water on your left. Turn left onto the gravel trail at the vacant lots
and park off to the side) at about 9:00 a.m.
