Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday August 28. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

Large flocks of SOOTY SHEARWATERS were reported during the week along the
northern Oregon coast. Between 800,000 and one million were along Clatsop
Beach August 25. The first night flights of SWAINSON?S THRUSHES occurred
during the week. The first migrant flocks of PINTAILS were also reported
along the coast and in the Willamette Valley. The first flights of
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were also reported with a flock flying over the Cascades
near Waldo Lake August 24.

On August 23 a male COSTA?S HUMMINGBIRD was near Brookings. Two ELEGANT
TERNS were at the Gold Beach August 27. During the week up to four
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, eight BAIRD?S SANDPIPERS, and up to nine PACIFIC
and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were on the North Spit of Coos Bay. A large
flock of RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was also there. On August 22 an immature
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a WESTERN KINGBIRD were at Yaquina Bay. Over
10,000 gulls gathered at Neskowin August 22. On August 24 a BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER was on the Bayocean Shorebird Flats at Tillamook Bay.

A group of BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, including one juvenile was at
Ridgefield NWR during the week. On August 21 a juvenile SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER was near Grants Pass.

Up to 200 BLACK ROSY-FINCHES are now being seen at the top of Steens
Mountain.
