Subject: Steller's Jays showing up more often

Dear Tweeters,

Over the past two weeks, almost everywhere I go I see a Steller's Jay. This "everywhere" applies only to Skagit County, but still, I have been struck by a sudden increase in sightings.

I think it is odd that I never noticed this in past years, but it does seem to make sense. Maybe it is just that these birds are reclusive during nesting time, and now that nesting is done, there are lots of juveniles, plus adults newly freed from parental duties. In addition, there are now filberts (hazelnuts) available.

Have other Tweeters noticed an August coming-out of Steller's Jays?

Good birding,
Gary Bletsch

Yours truly,
