I saw my first southbound "Sooty" Fox Sparrows yesterday, Aug. 29, along a
brushy roadside in Capitol Forest.

Coincidentally, our neighborhood Rufous Hummingbirds - some present in the
yard since about March 1 - are finally gone, or nearly so. One juvenile was
still coming in to the one remaining feeder and some of the flowers in the
yard yesterday, but only late in the day. Two to eight juveniles were
present in the yard all day long through Aug. 27. Even with four feeders up
and two hummingbirds, there were still constant aerial duels.
