On December 11, East Lake Washington Audubon's field trip from the DesMoines
Marina, down to Redondo, would have been considered successful without seeing
the albino Yellow-billed Loon. However, this beautiful white loon was quickly
spotted off Redondo Beach. Before the group left the area, the loon worked
its way back in toward the beach where 8 people could get outstanding views of
the pale, pinkish bill. Other species seen between the marina and Salt Water
State Park included Harlequin Duck, Black, White-winged, and Surf Scoter,
Pigeon Guillemot, Rhinocerous Auklet, Horned and Red-necked Grebe, and Barrow's
Goldeneye. A Spotted Sandpiper worked the tip of the marina jetty. Across the
water, off Vashon Island, a large number of frolicking Orca held the group's
attention for some time. On the return trip, a perched Merlin capped off the
final list of 41 species.
