Hi Diann,

I have the suet feeder hanging from a pole, which is protected by a
"squirrel guard", a metal tube-shaped barrier around the base of the pole.
I got the stuff at Wild Birds Unlimited in Redmond. The pole is about 15
feet from the nearest tree, and I have had no problem with squirrels since
I
set it up that way. When we were in Mill Creek, we did have occasional
problems with Starlings cleaning out the suet, but using raw suet or suet
with just insects ("Oregon Suet Block" at WBU) solved that problem for us.

Good luck and hope this helps,
