I also have heard that red pepper is not good for birds. Just because
they can't taste it doesn't mean it isn't damaging their mouths or
intestinal tracts.

And I have found that an upside-down suet feeder works well to keep
both red and grey squirrels away. If they chew the wood, try mounting a
suet cage on the underside of a horizontally suspended flat piece of
non - chewable material like metal or plexiglass or ??? Discourages
most of the starlings and jays too, unless they can jump up at it from
underneath.
