My feeders hang from the outer edge of the patio roof, keeps them mostly
dry and close enough for easy watching. I saw the expensive wooden models
in a store, went home and made one out of scraps of cedar siding and a
coat hanger in a matter of minutes. Birds must approach it from below,
rarely can a starling do that for more than a few seconds. Flickers find
it easy, a pair used to appear every morning right at 10 AM, you could
almost set your watch! One squirrel learned to climb a metal roof support
pole, then make a daring leap. Fun to watch, but I just moved the feeders
a bit further from the pole.
