Michael Hobbs was home sick today, so I led the weekly Marymoor walk. I
was joined at 8 AM by 7 others on a very nice morning. It started out
overcast and chilly (about 35 F), but calm. The cloud cover thickened
during the early morning, but then cleared and by the end of the walk we
were in clear, sunny skies.

We had 50 species for the day, although they came in bunches. Lots of
birds early, then a drought, then another bunch of birds along the
boardwalk, then another drought, then good birds starting in the east
meadow.

Notable species for the day included:

White-throated Sparrow - tan stripe in with a mixed flock of
Golden-crowned and White-crowned Sparrows seen at the beginning of the
day around the berry clump at the west end of the dog area parking lot.

Western Meadowlark - 8, in the east meadow about 11 AM

Cooper's Hawk - large adult bird, probably female by size, on a snag
visible from the east branch of the boardwalk.

Sharp-shined Hawk - circling high over the mansion area.

Red-breasted Sapsucker - just beyond the west side of the parking lot
near the mansion and headquarters office.

Greater Scaup - female in the river just downstream of the main dog
water access.

Pine Sisken - two small flocks, one across the river and one near the
compost piles at the east end of the interpretive lot.

Common Merganser - male, near the end of the boardwalk at Lake Sammamish.

Purple Finch - female (1) along the trail from the east meadow.

Some notable misses included Downy Woodpecker, Brown Creeper and
Townsend's Warbler.

The numbers for the year stay the same as Michael's report from last week.
