Tweeters and Whatcom Birders

I thought some of you might be interested in some highlights from the
Ladner, BC/WA Christmas Bird Count, held yesterday under partly cloudy
skies and calm winds. Although most of this count circle is in BC, it
also includes Point Roberts, WA. The count was organized by Jude
Grass, as it has been for many years, and I'm sure she will have the
complete results posted on the CBC website in a week or two.

Species total (tentative): 140

Unusual species:

WESTERN SCRUB-JAY-- seen at 4126 River Road in Ladner (Delta),
where it has been for several weeks-- new for the count
BLUE JAY-- seen on Lulu Island (Richmond), at the entrance to the
Richmond Scout Camp, on Dyke Road near the S foot of No. 5 Road
SLATY-BACKED GULL-- seen at the Burns Bog landfill, Delta (normally
off-limits to birders)
ICELAND GULL-- also seen at the Burns Bog landfill
GLAUCOUS GULL-- also at the Burns Bog landfill
Common Redpoll-- 8 seen along the Boundary Bay dyke near the foot
of 88th Street
Gyrfalcon-- probably 2 different birds seen; one on 112th Street,
Delta,
between Highway 10 and Highway 99; one at Centennial Park, Delta
Barn Swallow-- seen along the Boundary Bay dyke, Delta
Willet-- seen at the Tsawwassen ferry jetty base, Delta
Black Oystercatcher-- 5 seen on the Tsawwassen ferry jetty

I've probably forgotten a couple of other highlights, but those are
the ones that come to mind. A total of more than 50 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS
was also impressive.
