I've seen those Wigeons too at Greenlake and have enjoyed seeing them.
But, since we're on the topic of crossbreeds at Greenlake, what about
the other ones there. I've seen some kind of a crossbreeding of
Mallards that I can't figure out. When I observed a group of Mallards
on the south end of the lake, males and females, there would be some
male looking ones that were significantly larger and the markings were
slightly different. I looked at the field guide and it mentions that
some of the Mallards crossbreed with the American Black Duck, but they
really didn't look like the ones in the field guide. Does anyone know
(who birds Greenlake) what these larger Mallard-types are? Or
alternatively, if you haven't seen them, would you be so kind as to keep
a lookout for those larger ones and report back on what you see. Then
maybe I'll finally know what the scoop is and the mystery will be
solved.
