If you're planning to bird in Texas, subscribe to Texbirds, the Texas
equivalent of Tweeters. Texbirds will have up-to-the-minute info on
sightings throughout Texas. It's also a great place to ask questions and
link up with local birders in Del Rio. I suspect that November might have a
bigger variety because you'll catch the tail end of the migration. Del Rio
is dominated by the vast Amistad Reservoir, which has lots of water birds
during migration. The ABA Birders Guide to the Rio Grande Valley has a
short chapter on that area. It's not well covered in the guide books
because most birders zip through that area on their way to the better known
areas such as Big Bend or the Lower Rio Grande areas of Mission, McAllen,
Harlingen and Brownsville. The Harlingen Birding Festival is in November.
I've spent a couple of winters in Mission as a "winter Texan," and found
November very productive. You might also call Brad McKinney at the World
Birding Center in Mission, TX ((956-584-9156) or check out their web sight
at www.worldbirdinngcenter.org Good luck.
