Hi Tweeters,

Went on a quick trip to SW British Columbia with my
Mom who is not a birder but didn't mind getting to see
two owl species. Left Thursday, birded yesterday and
back through the driving rain and some snow today.
Weather yesterday up north wasn't bad. Got to see 2
American Avocets at Boundary Bay Park in Tsawwassen
(sp), yesterday morning. They were located just off
the point of land nearest the bay from the 12th Street
entrance. I called these two into the hotline. I
wonder if they were from Serpentine Park where three
Avocetts had been reported. We saw one of apparently
several Saw Whet Owls at Riefel Sanctuary, and the
reported Great Gray Owl at Prospect Point picnic area
in Stanley Park. The Great Gray was a lifer and was
sitting on the tiniest branch of what looked like a
young bigleaf maple tree. It was down low about 15
feet up and literally perched over the pathway. It
has beautiful markings on the back, like a tweed
jacket. I didn't get the best look at the bow tie
marking as it was facing away for the most part but
did get to see some of the white collar. It was weird
to watch a bird who was watching birds as it was very
keyed into an eagle that cruised around overhead.

Sorry to the directions hounds, I would suggest the
web. I was not on my home turf this time around.

Happy Birding

Kathy
