Garet,
This is very likely a bird that was banded on the zoo grounds by Jack Bettesworth. He is conducting a study of winter site fidelity in accipiters. He will appreciate the report.

Tweeters,
I just watched what I am presuming to be an immature sharp-shinned hawk visiting my backyard. He/she was here for about ten minutes moving about from perches on branches to the rim of the dry bird bath to the ground. For part of the time there was a group of three or four house sparrows hiding in the dense cover of a rosemary bush. The hawk hopped down to the ground and the sparrows flew out the other side. A large grey squirrel entered the garden and paid no apparent heed to the accipiter even to the extent of displacing the bird from the perch in lilac.
Hummingbirds returned to their feeder within less than two minutes of the hawks departure but nobody else has returned to the suet or seed feeders
The accipiter was banded with a silver band on the right leg and white over green on the left.
