Yes, I know winter's not over (or is it?), but since turkey vultures
occasionally wander back north beginning in February, thought I'd post the
meager winter 2002-2003 sightings. I was quite surprised that no Washington
Christmas Count reported turkey vultures, at least none that I saw. I'm
assuming they would be specially noted since they are a rarity in winter.
Following are reports from British Columbia and Oregon for November 2002
through January 2003:

27 Nov -- one over the Sechelt Golf Course, B.C.

29 Nov -- four over west Eugene, Oregon

18 Dec -- up to nine apparently wintering around the Fern Ridge Reservoir,
Oregon

29 Dec -- 10 near Cantrell Road on the Eugene, Oregon CBC

late Dec -- 12 roosting in woods near a home on Cherry Hill Road near
Eugene, Oregon

01 Jan -- 1 south of Coos Bay, Oregon with possibly 1-2 in the Rogue River
Valley

06 Jan -- one at Colwood, B.C.

08 Jan -- one near Belmont Park, B.C.

14 Jan -- five in the Saanich area north of Victoria, B.C.

19 Jan -- one at Smith Rocks State Park, Oregon

That it! None for Washington state which seems very unusual to me. Anyway,
folks, the vanguard will be back before we know it so keep looking up for
those soaring wonders.
