BANDING REPORT- Neawanna Wetland Preserve
02/04/2003

Method: Up to eight 9m mist nets are placed in mixed Oregon
Crabapple/Twinberry/Spruce along the the upper Neawanna River,
Seaside, Clatsop Co. OR. Captured birds are measured, ringed
with USBBL numbered metal bands and released. Data on time of
capture and side of net captured are also recorded to gain
an understanding of movements through the area.

Winter sparrow efforts will place special emphasis on identifying
FOX SPARROWS, SONG SPARROWS and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS to
subspecies.

We had a pretty good banding day for the "dead" of winter. Clear
skies, almost no wind and temperatures in the low 40's helped some.
Most interesting bird was a 4 year old (recaptured) BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEE with a eleven normal colored tail feathers and one white
tail feather that was still growing in. This is probably an example
of stress related leucism; a feather is lost, let's say, in a close
encounter with a cat, ocassionally these grow back white.
