Re: Schouweiler Rd. ospreys
The nesting platform I was referring to off Schouweiler Rd. near Elma is not
visible from the highway. It is in the Chehalis Wildlife Refuge and was
erected several years ago as an Eagle Scout project.

Two other nests I watch are on Schafer Boom Road between Montesano and
Brady. One is on a pole, which my father put up in the late 1970's when the
osprey's nest snag blew down in a storm. Another one on the same road is on
an electrical pole. As a note, my class of 5th graders built a nest
platform last year and, with the help of the local PUD, put it up near the
electrical pole on Schafer Boom Rd. One of "our" ospreys, the female, was
electrocuted there in the fall of 2001. Unfortunately, the ospreys did not
take the new nest last year. However, it was probably put up too late
(early April). We have hopes for this year.

On the subject of natural nest sites there is a nest in a snag near the
Sharon Grange in Porter off Hwy 12. Another is on a snag about 3 miles up
the east Satsop Road, and a third is on a tree at Lost Lake, Mason County.
