Hello all,
Townsend's are patchy in the winter, but locally they can be fairly
common especially around coniferous forests. Though my yard is the only
place where I have seen them in really large numbers throughout the winter.
The highest number I've counted this season was 23 on December 26. They're
attracted by suet and water, but much of the time I just see them gleaning
insects in the conifers surrounding my yard. Each year for the last several
years the warbler numbers grow. The flocks seem to come and go, as I haven't
seen more than three or four in two weeks, until just a moment ago when I
noted eight of them. Always a nice treat on a chilly day (in western
Washington, at least).

Cheers and good birding,
Charlie Wright
