This time of year back in Wisconsin the best birding for Horned Larks,
Lapland Longspurs and Snow Buntings was on freshly manured fields around
dairy farms. The birds, including Brewer's Blackbirds, could be found
feeding in the manure spread on the fields. After a moment of looking and
seeing only acres of cow dung one could find what looked like dead and dull
one second become a paradise of birds the next. These species of birds are
well camoflagued for feeding in the manure making them hard to see until they
started moving about. If you were smart you'd try to be upwind of the
manured field, it made the birding experience nicer and you could stay there
longer watching the show.
