When the Harvard Business Review interviewed David Sibley about the ability of birdwatchers to identify patterns, Sibley mentioned leading a field trip and suddenly being aware of the possibility of a species that would be quite rare in that area. Of course he found it. He acknowledged the possibility that tacit patterns that he was not overtly aware of influencing his ability to anticipate that species.

Since I have been reading lately about the structure and essence of the aesthetic experience and how birdwatching is a good example of that experience, I am intrigued with other examples of what Paul Simon said almost 40 years ago, "My life is made of patterns that can scarcely be controlled"
