Went birding the Skagit with my wife and a couple of other folks from Woodland Park Zoo on Sunday the 9th. It was a cool, cloudy day, but we did see some good birds. A couple of hi-lites would have to be Barn Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Barn Swallow and a light morph Rough-legged Hawk.

Here's my list.

Skagit birding Sunday, 02/09/03 In order of how I called them up from memory:



Ruby-crowned Kinglet (first bird of the day after turning on to Eide Rd.)

Barn Owl (in a barn, no less!)

Barn Swallow

Widgeon

Eurasian Widgeon (1 lone male in a group of American Widgeons)

Gadwall

Mallard

Lesser Scaup

Northern Pintail (really nice concentrations)

Snow Goose

Canada Goose

Trumpeter Swan

Green-wing Teal

Ring-bill Duck

Ruddy Duck

Double-crested Cormorant

Bald Eagle

Red-tailed Hawk (a lot of dark morphs)

Rough-legged Hawk (1 nice light morph bird)

Cooper's Hawk

Peregrine Falcon

Northern Harrier

Pileated Woodpecker (In woods at Padilla Bay Nature Center nice views from a distance)

Belted Kingfisher

Marsh Wren

White-crowned Sparrow

Golden-crowned Sparrow

Song Sparrow (concentrations seemed high there are hundreds of SOSP)

Lincoln's Sparrow

Fox Sparrow

European House Sparrow

House Finch

Spotted Towhee

Western Meadowlark

Glaucous-winged Gull

Ring-necked Pheasant

Virginia Rail (calling-not seen)

Dunlin (wonderful wheeling flocks of them)
