Tweets - yesterday may have looked like a beautiful day where you were,
but at Marymoor we were stuck in dense, cold fog until noon. It did keep
the number of dog people down somewhat, and the birds seemed a bit less
nervous in the enveloping mist, allowing us to watch perhaps unobserved by
the birds. We had a few interesting sightings, though the winter
continues to be notable for the sameness of the week-to-week lists.
Highlights:

Canvasback 1 female in slough just above weir. New for
2003.
Hairy Woodpecker Female working snags near Pea Patch.
Brown Creeper At least 1 near picnic shelter, NE of South
Lot
Lincoln's Sparrow At least 3 S of windmill
Wh.-troated Sparrow Tan-stripe bird in with large flock of GCSP and
HOSP
Western Meadowlark 1 in East Meadow after walk
Purple Finch 1 female across from rowing club dock

The HAIRY WOODPECKER was a strikingly black-and-white individual,
appearing to be more like the E. Washington form. There was no hint of
duskiness or greyness on the belly.

The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen from the parking lot on the ground
with a large flock of Golden-crowned and House Sparrows. It was right
where all the dog people set out and they therefore didn't stick around
much past 7:30. Several people coming out with me arrived after 7:30 and
missed the bird. But the rest of us got to watch the sparrow for several
minutes. A very nice way to start the day.

We could see NOTHING from the lake platform, and there was heavy equipment
working the compost piles, so we didn't bird there.

Both Muskrat and Long-tailed Weasel were seen briefly yesterday. There
seems to be a weasel that hangs out roughly in the viscinity of the
porta-potties near the weir.

We ended up with 46 species for the day, and the Canvasback raises the
year list to 71.
