Dear Tweeters,
The dry spell was breaking today, and with the
change in weather came an increase in the birds at our
place near Lyman (Skagit County). Suddenly on Saturday
there were lots of birds, where there were not so many
just the day before. In fact, I suspect some sort of
insect may have emerged today. There were scores of
American Robins and Vulgar Starlings in my yard,
foraging in the grassy and weedy areas. Junco numbers
increased at my feeder as well. A flock of thirty Pine
Siskins showed up to feed on douglas fir seeds. A
Downy Woodpecker and a Red-shafted Flicker both
appeared, the first woodpeckers in the yard for over a
week.
A quick trip in the rain to Grandy Lake (on the
Baker Lake road out of Birdsview) resulted in good
numbers of Lesser Scaup, along with the usual
Ring-necked Ducks and Buffleheads. A lone Gadwall
accompanied a handful of Mallards. There were also a
couple of Common Mergansers, but no Hooded Mergansers.
