A couple of weeks ago, en route to a WOS board meeting in Ellensburg, Diann
MacRae, Michael Hobbs, and I stopped to look at about 6 Bald Eagles
standing in a field. Suddenly, one of the eagles took off after a raven
that was carrying a bloody-looking food item in its bill. After quite a
chase, twisting and turning, the raven dove into some thick trees where the
eagle couldn't follow and got away with the food. Later, on the way back
to Seattle, we saw a gull chase a kingfisher, though we couldn't see what,
if anything, the kingfisher was carrying. After a short chase, the
kingfisher also flew into the trees, losing its pursuer. So, the
kleptoparasites don't always succeed.
