This morning leaving Othello for Columbia NWR I had a falcon perched on a
powerline. It took off and flew directly toward me about the time I
realized it was a Prairie, but just before it re-appeared from behind a tree
I noticed another bird trying to catch up. I don't remember seeing Prairies
out away from a nest cliff doing any of the courtship routine, and soon
realized this was not the normal pair bonding. The smaller lead Prairie
disappeared, but the larger bird returned to claim its spot on a different
pole. It "instantly transformed" into an adult Peregrine, which explains
the "non-courtship" behavior.
