Jerry, Gene, & Tweeters,

I appreciate your postings on Hawaii's birds having just read the Hawaii Audubon
Society's field guide, "Hawaii's Birds" available at the website below. I
definitely felt the irony in your message, Jerry, and can only imagine Gene's
horror to learn of yet another threat to these globally unique birds he was so
fortunate to work with closely.

The Hawaii Audubon Society has done a great job of briefly outlining how wildlife
must have come to the volcanic islands, how birds evolved there that exist in no
other place on earth, and the appalling extinction rate of these birds due to the
arrival of human beings. For those of you following this thread, I trust it is
evident why I feel birders might wish to avoid rushing over there for a look.
However, the booklet is full of pictures and information to help us appreciate
from a distance.
