Hello Tweets,

Today my mother and I spent a few hours checking a few locations in the Satsop area, depite the very heavy and constant rain at times. Our first bird species for 2003 was a Barred Owl near our residence during the early morning, presumably the same individual that we located on the Tacoma CBC on the 21st of December,2001. We birded the Satsop area during the latter part of the wet afternoon along with many other birders that we met along Moore Rd.,while watching the RUFF during two visits. The bird was observed actively foraging at times,as well as preeening and ruffling it's feathers due to being wet and behaving in the normal fashion than in previous visits along with the lingering Greater Yellowlegs. We also birded along the entire Wenzel Slough Rd. from Keys Rd. to Vance Creek Co.Park and noted several species that have been recently reported including up to 4 Swamp Sparrows that we located at the same location along Wenzel Slough Rd. that yesterday hosted 5 birds. The weedy field in which the birds were in was quite wet in places due to the recent rainfall, but enough pishing produced good but brief looks at the birds, after they were located by their call note(s). While searching the same wet, weedy field a single adult tan-striped White-throated Sparrow was also observed along with many Song Sparrows and up to 10 Lincoln's Sparrows. Other species noted along Wenzel Slough Rd. and at Vance Creek Co. Park included:

1 lingering Western Grebe
1 lingering female Redhead
12 Trumpeter Swans
1 adult White-tailed Kite

Good birding,

Ruth and Patrick Sullivan
