Subject: Wintering Orange-crowned Warblers

Hi Ian. This is Daniel Bastaja up in Vancouver, Canada replying on Thurs.
Jan. 2nd, 2003. There seems to be a lot more Orange-crowned Warblers around
the south coastal region of British Columbia this winter than normal. Three
weeks ago I had 4 on one day in Abbotsford, and there were 2 on the Ladner
(Delta, B.C.) CBC a week and a half ago. Add to this two or three sightings
that have been posted on the local chat group and it adds up to a few birds.
My guess is the relatively dry and mild weather through Oct./ Nov./ Dec. has
kept populations a tad further north than they would normally be. The
weather may also be affecting Common Yellowthroats. I can remember for years
and years and years a Common Yellowthroat in B.C. in winter was just unheard
of. The last few years they seem to be turning up. 2 reports last winter and
now 3 this winter.
Regards,
Daniel Bastaja
