Gyrs:

I had a brown-morph Gyrfalcon up off Church Rd. (just east of Farm-to-Market
Rd) on the Padilla Bay CBC Dec. 28, interestingly the bird had a brief
scuffle with a Prairie Falcon (presumably the same bird present for some
time near the W-90), and while this was happening a Red-tail soared close by
above. Quite a spectacle! I got the feeling that people were more
interested than usual in the Gyr because, indeed, there have been few
reports of Gyrs in the region.

FYI, other highlights up in the Samish Flats on the 28th: seven Gr.
White-fronted Geese near the W-90, two Harlan's Hawks (+/- pure) and another
with a red tail (these in east Samish Flats), a Short-eared Owl near Samish
R. mouth, 4 W. Sandpipers in w/Dunlin at two different sites, an integrade
flicker, an Orange-cr. Warbler at the east end of D'Arcy Rd., a flock of
Lapland Longspurs near the W-90, and plenty of pipits, Lincoln's Sparrows
and Marsh Wrens around.
