I want to corroborate Katie's posting about Kari Osterhaug; I worked with Kari on occasion on my King County job, and she also helped me site and install purple martin boxes at Swamp Creek near Bothell. She also played volleyball with my team at the Green Lake gym. She wasn't the best volleyball player, but a great individual, an enthusiastic birder, and an excellent naturalist. Those Swamp Creek boxes will carry special memories for me from now on, and I'll be working them with her in mind. She used to do bird surveys in that King County acquisition area between the Burke Gilman Trail and the Sammamish Slough, a bit past Kenmore.

Mention of her violent death I'm sure is shocking news, and details are scarce; my current impression is that it was more a tragedy than a crime. News will be in the media shortly, I suppose. This was a very sad day.
