Dear Scott and Tweeters,

Yep, Scott is right about Bond.

Ian Fleming was once quoted as saying that he happened to glance down at his copy of James Bond's field guide to the birds of the West Indies, just as he was casting about for a name for his spy character. He said he chose "James Bond" because it had a dull, matter-of-fact sound to it. Later on, he caught some good-natured ribbing from the ornithologist about this opinion of the name.

In the first James Bond novel, Dr. No, the secret agent is sent to a Caribbean island because a mysterious scientist is disrupting some birds in the area--I believe they were Roseate Spoonbills. Agent 007 scoffs at the little old ladies in tennis shoes of the Audubon Society, and M chides him, reminding 007 that these little old ladies pack a lot of clout in Washington.

Yours truly,
