Lauren,
My fiancee is not as die-hard a birder as me, but still wanted to buy a
decent pair of binoculars (and she did not want to spend as much as I did
for my beloved Swarovski's!). Nevertheles, we found a great pair at
www.eagleoptics.com and I was frankly really surprised with the quality of
these waterproof binoculars for $169 (I often use them at home for
feeder-watching when she is not looking!). Perhaps their only drawback is
that they are mail-order, so not sure how fast they can deliver (in time for
your friend's trip).

I stress that I have no interests in this company!
