East Lake Washington Audubon Field Trip
January 9 - Juanita Bay Park - 17 Birders - 48 Species - For everyone
arriving at the Park, there were many scopes focused on the Merlin eating a
meal at the top of a snag that was illuminated by the sunshine.? The
Red-tailed Hawk was nearly forgotten.? Small birds were few, but that didn't
matter when the Rough-legged Hawk flew to the top of a conifer.?
Unfortunately, crows drove it off all too soon.? A Cooper's Hawk put up with
the crows as it perched in a deciduous tree for all to see.? Later two Bald
Eagles soared across the bay and in a cooperative effort successfully tired
an American Coot that became a meal for one of the eagles. As everyone headed
back to the cars, a Sharp-shinned Hawk was seen perched in a tree with a
second Cooper's Hawk.? It was a grand day for birding in a local park.?

The Rough-legged Hawk was a "first" for Juanita Bay Park.? It flew in from
the west and perched in a tall conifer tree at the south end of the Park.? It
flew east shortly after a number of crows swooped in on it.? The Bald Eagles
were seen from the causeway at close view.? The American Coots were balled up
in a couple of tight, swirling rafts, as the two eagles flew low across the
bay.?? Individual coots would rush to join the rafts. However, the eagles
singled out one coot and in a cooperative effort caused it to continually
dive.? Finally, the coot was caught and the eagle flew off, followed by the
second eagle.? Suddenly, the coot was dropped into the bay.? One of the Bald
Eagles circled back and landed in the water.? With a scope on it, it looked
like an "odd gull".? The coot was retrieved and the eagle flew to one of the
boat docks on the north end of the bay to dine alone.
