The following birds were observed by Wayne Weber during a visit to
Point Roberts, Whatcom County, WA on January 5, 2003, between 9:30 AM
and 2:00 PM. The weather was mainly sunny, with almost no wind, and
sea conditions were calm, allowing good viewing of marine birds.

Areas visited included Lighthouse Marine Park, the west end of Gulf
Road, Edwards Drive, South Beach, Pauls Road, and Lily Point.

The highlight for me was the observation of 8 MARBLED MURRELETS, 6 at
Lighthouse Marine Park and 2 at Lily Point, all of them flying in
pairs. This species, once common at Point Roberts, has become
increasingly scarce there in recent years, and I miss them on most
visits to the Point these days.

Also of note were 2 VIRGINIA RAILS heard calling in wet fields north
of the Marina, and a HUTTON'S VIREO near Lily Point (regular all
year, but quiet in winter).

One DOUGLAS SQUIRREL was also heard calling.
