Hi all,
Late this morning my wife Pipper, two other birders, (sorry I
missed their last names) and myself, located the RB previously reported on
Norman Rd. It was on the ground just behind the fence with the sign saying
"do not enter". A row of small wooden calf sheds were there and it was
feeding in the sawdust bedding next to one of these sheds. We got good looks
for about 1/2 hr before a Sharp-shinned Hawk cruised through and put all the
smaller birds down and about. Thanks to all who reported this bird
earlier-the directions were perfect!
Later we went into Stanwood and headed toward Camano Island.
At the bridge crossing Davis Slough, a "Harlan's" Hawk was pearched on a
crossarm and as it flew the pale-cream tail with a brownish band was very
evident! It also had white on the nape, and light streaking on the chest.
Continuing onto the island we turned right onto Good Rd and then proceeded to
go right onto Moore Rd, and down to English Boom for a view of Skagit Bay
(named for the old log booms of the English Lumber Company). An impressive
number of waterfowl were here including 90 Green-winged Teal, which included
a stunning drake EURASIAN GREEN-WING. The bird was very clear to observe, and
one of the best marked I have ever seen for this subspecies. The head was a
brillant chestnut color, showing more contrast than the other G-w males.
All day we saw a number of good birds but these were the
best. It was a good day for birding.
Good birding,
Doug Watkins
