2002-2003 Annotated list: Lewiston, ID/Clarkston, WA 5th Christmas Bird
Count, preliminary results. 46? 24' N by 116? 54' W. Circle center east of

7:30 A.M.-5:30 P.M. January 4, 2003.

Cloudy with sporadic light and brief moderate rain throughout the day. 35-50
degrees F. Wind SW 5-15 m.p.h. Fresh water open. Wild food crop good. 22
observers (9-20 parties). Total party hours 111: 39.75 by foot, 71.25 by
car, .25 owling; total party miles 340: 28.5 by foot, 312 by car.

Thanks to all who participated on our 5th count. It was a dreary, rainy day
and birds were hard to find. Some landbirds, most noticeably sparrows, were
low in numbers, possibly more dispersed due to the relatively mild and
snowless late fall/early winter we experienced. Despite the general lack of
numbers, we found 91 species, which was a new high for the count by 5
species. Waterfowl numbers were below average but well represented in
species with 6 loons and grebes and 19 geese and ducks. Raptors were well
represented with a total of 10 species including 4 falcon species but
numbers of buteos were low as they have been all fall in the region. Gulls
were found in good numbers with over 500 indivduals of 5 species due largely
to coverage of the Clarkston Landfill this year. New for the count were
Pacific Loon, Peregrine Falcon, Glaucous-winged Gull, Western Gull, and
Red-naped Sapsucker. Interestingly 19 species were represented by only 1
individual each.
