Hi. Daniel Bastaja posting for Sunday, Jan. 26th, 2003. My mom is reading a
book about JOHN JAMES AUDUBON called "Creation" by Canadian author Katherine
Govier. Most birders are familiar with his ornithological work but the book
reveals a lot of interesting personal detail. For example, Audubon wasn't
born Audubon. Not only did he change his name but he did it three times. He
was born in Haiti as Jean Rabin. Then his parents changed it to Jean
Newhouse. Then he changed it to Jean Jacques Fougiere and finally, when his
dad sent him from France to Pennsylvania to manage an estate (and he became
an American citizen) he changed it to John James Audubon. Kind of makes you
think what might have been had he not changed his name. Today we could have
the National Rabin Society. :-)

Regards,
Daniel Bastaja
