This is the Vancouver Natural History Societies Rare Bird Alert for
Sunday January 26, evening update, sponsored in part by the Wild
Birds Unlimited Stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

The feature bird is MARBLED GODWIT and GLAUCOUS GULL.

Sightings for Sunday January 26

The wintering MARBLED GODWIT was relocated today in a field along
highway 17 on the east side along with hundreds of BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS and the location is slightly north of the large greenhouse.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was sitting in a small flock of gulls along Ladner
Trunk road and 88th.

A raptor sighted at Brunswick Point was likely an immature PEREGRINE
FALCON (tundrius race) with a broken right wing but it is still able
to fly. A falconer has also lost a GYRFALCON CROSS PRAIRIE FALCON
within the last 3 weeks and this bird may also have been sighted in
the area over the last week. Birders should look for birds with leg
bands and report them to the bird alert (604 737 3074). There were
also 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS out at the end of Brunswick Point.

The wintering AMERCIAN AVOCET was on the beach with the gulls at Beach
Grove Lagoon in Tsawaassen. There were also 50 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and
50 SANDERLING.

The WILLET and 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were on the Tsawaassen jetty.

There was a pair of Cinnamon Teal at the Reifel bird sanctuary in
Ladner with at least 4 BARN SWALLOWS.

An AMERCIAN KESTREL was near the intersection of 41B and Deltaport
way.

There were 9 WILSON'S SNIPE AND 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS 1 KM south of
Ladner on Ladner Dr.

Saturday January 25

An Adult HARRIS' SPARROW was seen along River Rd in Ladner about 4
houses from the end. Please respect private property as the bird can
be viewed from the road.

The CRESTED MYNAS were between 1st and 2nd on Wylie in Vancouver on
the brick building on the east side of the road.

In Little Campbell River Park in south Surrey was a bird fitting the
description of a EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL near the train trestle
bridge.

There were 37 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS on 52nd street south of Hwy 17 and
the AMERICAN AVOCET was at Beach Grove.

There was a flock of 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS seen at an unknown location
in Chilliwack.

There were 4 BARN SWALLOWS near the entrace to the Iona Island Sewage
Treatment Plant.

Friday, January 24th

An adult HARRIS' SPARROW was seen along River Rd in Ladner.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was in a large gull roost along Ladner Trunk Rd and
88th street.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Ladner there were 12 BARN SWALLOWS
and there were 4 more along the Iona Island causway. Also at Reifel
were 2 SWAMP SPARROWS and a pair of CINNAMON TEAL and sightings of a
GREAT HORNED OWL, AMERICAN BITTERN AND PEREGRINE FALCON.

On 34th street in Ladner in fields were 2 RED KNOTS 10 WESTERN
SANDPIPERS 12 LEAST SANDPIPERS, HUNDREDS of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and many
DUNLIN.

On Sea Island near the airport was a NORTHERN SHRIKE.
