Turkey vultures seem to be doing well and expanding their range even more
to the north as they seem to be doing across the country. Thanks to all for
your reports. July should be the month to see young vultures - watch for
their dark grey heads and - up close - the mostly dark beak.

Turkey vulture reports for June 2003 from Washington, British Columbia, and
Oregon:

01 3 east of Sequim; 1 at Grass Creek; 1 at Chenois Creek; 1 at the Silver
Lake visitors center; 3 circling north of Cassimer Bar; 6 others regularly
seen in the area after carp on the riverbank
02 4 over Okanogan heading northwest toward Pogue Flat
03 1 northwest of Canyon Lake Park (Baker Hwy); 2 soaring in the same area
later; 1 at the intersection of Hwy 9/Baker Hwy.; 1 south of Mt. Vernon
04 4 a mile east of Sequim; 1 at Gibsons beach, B.C.; 1 west of Port
Angeles; 1 at Gibsons, B.C.; 3 soaring near Cassimer Bar
05 5 on a dead deer near Sprague Lake; 1 cruising the beach at Gibsons, B.C.
06 20 soaring singly and in groups on the north side of the Columbia River
near Hwy 14; 2 at Littlerock; 1 over Sammamish
07 1 northwest of Yakima; 1 over Hwy 109 at Grass Creek; 1 next to the
Wesport airfield; 8 resting on the southwest part of Cassimer Bar, 6 on the
ground and 2 on fence posts; 1 at Potlatch; one over Gresham, Oregon; 1 in
Wasco County, Oregon
09 1 between Marysville and Everett; 1 flying south out over Lake
Washington between the floating bridges; 4 over Squamish Harbor flying
south; 2 west of Fall City; 1 circling the marshes and savannah near the
Fort Okanogan viewpoint;
10 -- 4 soaring northwest of Enumclaw; 9 soaring on thermals near the
Vernon Commonage, B.C.; 4 at Bench Row Road/Commonage Road, B.C.; 1
northeast of Walla Walla
11 2 at Pitt Meadows, B.C.
12 1 at the Sechelt Airport, B.C.; 12 over Hwy 12 west of Brady; 1 between
Hoquiam and Ocean Shores
13 1 at Gibsons, B.C.; 1 at Clear Lake
14 "as common as crows" along I-5 from Oregon south; 1 at Camp McKinney Road
15 1 at the L.T. Murray Reserve; 3 feeding in a field near Stanwood; 2
feeding on field mice killed during haying near Stanwood; 2 over a
freshwater lagoon at Sargeant's Bay Provincial Park, B.C.
16 2 near Redmond; 1 between Fall City and Carnation; 1 at Carnation Marsh
17 8 at the Schouweiler Road wetland; 1 west of North Bend; 1 low-flying
near the Woodinville-Duvall Road; 1 soaring with a raven east of Swan Lake,
B.C.
19 1 over Gower Point, B.C., 1 over Upper Roberts Creek, B.C.
21 1 flew up from the grassy road edge near Rockport
22 near the Toppenish Refuge 12, 10 in one kettle
23 "many" flying low over grasslands near the Allan Brooks Nature Centre
in Vernon, B.C.; "greater numbers" in the Lantzville, B.C. area a
'comeback' bird

Vance Creek County Park; 1 at Joyce

27 5 perched in the dead top of a Douglas-fir west of the Voght Valley
Ranch, B.C.; 1 circling over the Sechelt Airport, B.C., with an immature
bald eagle
28 4 at Colstream Ranch near Vernon, B.C.
29 3 near Vernon, B.C.; 8 soaring near Heffley Creek near Kamloops, B.C.;
2 near Fort Simcoe
