As the hummingbirds are leaving their breeding areas, they are reappearing
here on the steppe. Today, I saw my first hummer (female or juvie, no
species ID) in the yard since May. For those who keep lists of garden
plants attractive to hummers, it was working the Columbine (Aquilegia
hybrids in a variety of colors and Maltese Cross (Lychnis chacedonica -- an
old-fashioned perennial, about 3 ft tall with dense terminal clusters of
bright red flowers).
