I agree for states and counties, but I wonder when it comes to yard lists.
I count anything I see ~from~ my yard.

For one thing, it's hard to tell if the bird is actually over my two acres
of desert. And when the Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes fly overhead at
10,000 feet on their way to and from Bosque del Apache, it's hard to tell
if they are ~directly~ overhead.

Of course, like everything else, it's ~my~ list . . .
