Bob, Eliane and Ira,

When I gathered leads from tweeters a while back, two areas were mentioned that are in the Leavenworth area. The Camas burn on Camas Creek, which runs east from the Blewett Pass Road just south of the junction with the Highway that runs from Leavenworth to Wenatchee. Sorry I can't remember the highway numbers, and I'm not near my trusty DeLorme at the moment. The second place is Icicle Creek, just west of Leavenworth. The "hotter" spot recently has been the Nile Burn on FSR 1600 off of highway 410, west of Naches. This may well be played out by now however. We had Blacked Backs on the nest three weeks ago, but the young have now fledged and the nest is empty. The birds are still in the area, but have dispersed. There were Williamson's Sapsuckers and White Headed in the area as well. Another traditionally good spot is FSR 39 near Rogers Lake, north out of Winthrop. That's what makes the Blacked Backed so tough. They seem to be few and far between and are hard to st!
umble on
except when nesting. June is definitely the best month. We had Three Toed and Spruce Grouse on Mt. Salmo last weekend, but that's a long way from the Blewett Pass area. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but all 3 of these guys seem to require a lot of luck to bump into. Perhaps some other Tweeters have had more recent finds. Let us know how you do!
Good Luck, -Rolan

Birders,

I will be in Washington 7/16 to 7/22 and the BBWO is also a target bird for me. I would appreciate it if any private answers to the Taylors could be cc'd to me.

Thank you,

Hi Tweets

Elaine and I have the weekend free and she would like to add Black-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers to her Life List. Our intentions are to look at a couple of burns in the Blewett Pass/Leavenworth area and see what can be found. If anyone can help out with more specific details (Forest Service Road numbers, mileages, areas, etc) it would be greatly appreciated. Nesting locations would be fantastic and they will not be disturbed -- a scope will be used.

Now, for me, I need Spruce Grouse. Yeah, I know where they are supposed to be -- they just aren't there when I am!!

Thanks much and have a good birding weekend!
