On Friday evening (7/11/03) Warren Hall, Jim Acton,
Joyce Alonso, and I visited some spots for Poorwill on
the west side of Spokane.

At the first site, a Poor Will responded to Jim's tape
vocally but never showed itself. At the second site,
we never heard a response, but one Poorwill flew over
us only to disappear.

Farther up Old Trails Road, we stopped by a meadow and
could hear several Poorwills calling along the edge of
the woods. However, they never came closer.

The surprise bonus treat of the evening was an
impressive display of aurora borealis. This incredible
show out competed both the bright twilight and a
nearly full moon. The aurora was quite dynamic with
twisting bands, bright curtains, intense rays, and
rapidly changing forms. After the corona formed,
amazing wavelike pulsation rippled overhead. Later,
most the display to the north dissipated, but a
detached bright curtain remained to the south of the
zenith. Although the colors were kind of washed out
bluish- white, there was a purple colored hem at the
bottom for a while. There was more rapid movement
throughout this display than I have ever witnessed
before. It was incredibly beautiful.

The display began around 9:50 PM PDT and lasted for
about an hour. It was first time that I have ever seen
athe aurora out before the sky had completely
darkened.

northern lights?
