While eating lunch on my front porch, I was watching the many different kinds
of bees feeding on the various flowers and specifically the lavender. Then a
Rufous Hummingbird came in to feed on the cape fuschia. I glanced away for a
second and when I looked again for the hummingbird I found it in a
hover-stall about 15 feet up. After a several seconds it took a shallow plunge and then
dove into a red cedar tree.

As soon as the Mariners' game ended, the adult male Pileated Woodpecker flew
in with his female youngster. They called back and forth for more than 5
minutes, the adult drummed on the bat box, then they both came in to feed at a
stump in the backyard. About a half-hour later, the pair of California Quail
showed up with their band of nine. The youngsters are at an age where their
feathers and head markings are quite distinct but no where near the adult
plummage. Their heads appear to be just two buff stripes. Very interesting to look
at. The cottontail bunny pranced around, too, and the Purple Finches continue
to enjoy the sunflower seed.
