I have noted the many comments about "Winged Migration". It appears that
some of you are not aware that the imprinting of geese, cranes and swans to
ultralights has been going on for many years. The early pioneer was the
late Bill Carrick near Toronto, Canada. He first pioneered flying geese for
an IMAX movie in a large windtunnel at his farm. Later he taught 18
trumpeter swans to fly with a speedboat. During a visit with him I had the
opportunity to go out on the lake in a speed boat, and the swans flew with
the boat, at 35 mph. Their wing tips brushed my face on several beats.
Later Bill Lishman took up the effort and from that came the Hollywood
movie "Flyaway Home", a fictional story. Bill Lishman has a video of his
first attempts at flight with the geese and his ultralight in a short video
called C'mon Geese.
The original purpose of the goose work was to pioneer techniques to teach
trumpeter swans and later whooping cranes new and safe migration routes.
This has worked better in some geographic areas than others for swans and
has worked well for cranes.
