I'm trying to track down early 20th Century ornithologist J.H. Bowles' journals
if they still exist. The hope is that he might have recorded a trip or two to
Vashon or Maury Islands at some point. Operating out of Tacoma, he birded many
areas of the state but especially the prairies of Pierce and Thurston Counties.
Vashon is just across the water and it seems hard to believe he didn't hop a
ferry at some point to take a look. He wrote a number of interesting accounts
in the Bent Lifehistories series on birds in the south Puget Sound area as well
as in Birds of Washington State in 1908 with Dawson.
