The Merlin we've seen four or five times in June hasn't shown up much since
the #$%^&* fireworks. Three nights ago we had this GHOW come
through, perching in a neighbor's pine tree and hooting so loud we thought
it was Dennis Rodman looking for work. Even the dog got the willies, then
this morning we heard what sounded like crows pestering a cell phone
(cawing answered by a series of "rings" all on a very consistent pitch).
Turned out to be a juvenile (by plumage and eye color) Cooper's Hawk,
female if that sexual dimorphism in size is apparent in the first year as
it's noticeably bigger than the crows that were pestering it but the call
(a bell-like heeer heeer heeer). sounded more like a male to me. I managed
to get a few telephotos of it, several perched in our Atlantic Cedar, one
on departure and a couple of silhouettes. Then the Goodyear Blimp comes
by, pretty much freaking out anything with feathers not already in a pillow
case.
