Hello, this is my first Tweeters posting--and I'm sure my non-birding
friends will be glad that I have found another outlet for my birding
stories.
Thanks to my fabulous introduction to the Montlake Fill by Connie on
Saturday, I was inspired to go back on Tuesday evening from approx.
7:45-9:15.
My highlights included:
* In the central pond: Within a space of 30 seconds, I saw a GBH, a
male/female pair of belted kingfishers, and then not one, but two, green
herons. Yes, two. Of course they immediately fled yellow legs and all into
the lower trees upon my arrival, but I felt incredibly lucky. I then settled
in to watch the kingfishers. The male was in a tree at the northwest end,
the female on a snag to the east. After about 20 mins, the male dive-bombed
the female, chasing her into the tree he had just left. He then took over
her snag as sentinel for his fishing. Meanwhile, a least sandpiper appeared
out of nowhere and poked around about 12-15 feet from me.
* While crossing the bridge into the Fill, I saw a pie-billed grebe with 3
juveniles.
* When leaving across the bridge at dusk, I came across 6 immat. bank
swallows--3 on each side of the bridge being attended to by two adults.
I will go back!
