There was lots of martin activity this morning at the Shilshole Bay colony, and the low tide enabled me to walk close to the pilings. Nestlings are clearly visible especially in the south gourds, the young ones straining to reach out for food from the parents. The morning sun is excellent for photos; evening sun makes viewing difficult. Some may be fledging within just a few days. Crows and gulls kept the adults wary, and frequently the martins would be trying to drive them off. Kris Baker and I saw activity at about 10 or 11 cavities, but we're not certain if all actually have nests; sometimes the adults check out various cavities that they're not actually nesting in.
